Juniper is used as an incense for ceremonies everywhere it grows from Europe to North America. Its astringent cleansing smell is believed to protect against contagion and evil spirits. Juniper’s medicinal qualities as a diuretic are known in Siberia and Russia, while the Juniper tree shows up as a metaphor for reincarnation in German folk tales.
